Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries in crash

A young motorcyclist has suffered serious, possibly life-altering injuries after a terrifying collision last week on Front Road, and the community is coming together to assist the family.

The collision, which occurred on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2022 just after noon, happened when the driver of a motor vehicle turned left into oncoming traffic, causing the motorcyclist to crash into the car. The motorcyclist, a 17-year-old female, was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

At the time of publication, Kingston Police could not say whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

Charges have been laid against the driver of the car, a 43-year-old female, according to Kingston Police.

She has been charged criminally with taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, and is also facing one charge of driving while suspended, a Provincial charge, as well as one count of left turn – failing to afford a reasonable opportunity to avoid a collision, a Highway Traffic Act violation.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to assist the motorcyclist. Christopher Morris, father of one of the motorcyclist’s best friends, started the fundraiser.

“Justyne has recently been very badly injured in a motorcycle accident. She has multiple spinal injuries as well as other severe injuries to her body,” Morris explained. “We are collecting donations to go towards her and her family to help get them through this very difficult time as Justyne will have to be hospitalized for several weeks.”

According to Morris, she will likely need to spend several weeks getting spinal rehabilitation at a specialized care centre in Toronto.
