Kingston Fire & Rescue crews from 3 fire stations responded to a reported structure fire at 768 Montreal St shortly before 3 a.m. on Monday morning.
When crews arrived, flames were visible coming from the roof area. Fire crews initially mounted an offensive attack and conducted a search inside the building, but as fire conditions deteriorated crews changed to a defensive attack, utilizing a ladder apparatus to extinguish the blaze. Kingston Fire & Rescue says that all occupants of the building have been accounted for. Their condition has not been disclosed.
The cause may be due to a candle in one of the apartment units, said Platoon Chief David Latour, and damage is estimated at up to $500,000. The investigation is ongoing. Montreal St is expected to remain closed until about 10:30am in the vicinity of the blaze. Detours are set up at Railway and Hickson streets.
