Missing Tyendinaga woman located deceased

A Tyendinaga woman who had been missing since Jan. 8, 2024 has sadly been located deceased.

“Michelle (last name withheld) has been located, but it was an outcome no one wanted,” Tyendinaga Police confirmed in a statement on the afternoon of Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. “The Tyendinaga Police wish to express heartfelt condolences to Michelle’s family and the friends that stood by them.”

Police said they would not be providing any further details surrounding the death.

“The Tyendinaga Police would like to thank all those that assisted over the past month. A sincere thank you to over 120 community volunteers that donated their own time and their own equipment to help search and bring food,” Tyendinaga Police continued.

In addition to Tyendinaga Police, over 30 Ontario Provincial Police officers also assisted in the weeks-long missing person search, including flight crews, canine units, and search boats.

Update (Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at 11 a.m.):
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have now confirmed the reports from Tyendinaga Police over the weekend regarding the tragic conclusion of the search for a missing Tyendinaga woman.

On Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County OPP issued a press release stating that Michelle Kunkle was located deceased. The 38-year-old had been missing for just over a month, having last been seen on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, according to police. In the press release, the OPP said the missing woman’s body had been located deceased on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, “under the ice in a waterway near the intersection of Highway 2 and York Road in Shannonville, in the area where she had last been seen.”

“While the investigation remains ongoing, there is no indication foul play was involved,” the OPP stated, noting that no further information will be released, and requesting privacy for the family of the deceased.

“The OPP and Tyendinaga Police wish to thank everyone who assisted in the search efforts or provided any information.”
