A multi-vehicle collision involving a school bus caused delays this morning on Highway 401 in Napanee.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the collision involved two transport trucks, two passenger vehicles, and a school bus, and took place around 9:15 a.m. on Friday, Apr. 12, 2024, in the westbound lanes of the 401 between Palace Road and County Road 41.

“There were no students on the bus at the time of the collision,” the OPP detailed in a social media post.

Traffic was routed off the westbound lanes at Palace Road, but at 9:54 a.m. one westbound lane was reopened.

“Only minor injuries to two people. One lane of the westbound 401 is opening with traffic moving slowly.”

The OPP said drivers should expect delays until all vehicles are removed from the road.

Update (Friday, Apr. 12, 2024, at 1:25 p.m.):

The driver of one of two transport trucks involved in a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 401 is now facing charges, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

As reported above, the collision occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Friday, Apr. 12, 2024, in the westbound lanes of the 401 between Palace Road and County Road 41.

“When police arrived, they found two separate collisions contained to the right driving lane and the off-ramp to County Road 41 North,” the OPP detailed later in the day in a press release, noting that fire and paramedic services also attended the scene.

“The original collision occurred when a vehicle lost control in the rain and slid into another vehicle. The second collision occurred when a transport truck ran into a school bus as all vehicles were slowing down for the original collision.”

The driver of that transport truck was subsequently charged for “following too close to the school bus,” the OPP said.

“Investigation continues for the original driver who lost control of their vehicle.”

Police reiterated that there were no students on the bus at the time of the collision, and that two people were transported to hospital with minor injuries. According to the OPP, all of the vehicles involved were towed from the scene, and Highway 401 was fully reopened to traffic by 11:30 a.m.

Police did not identify the driver that was charged.
