This weekend, people in and around Kingston may see an increased presence of uniformed military personnel with weapons on roadsides in the area.

According to a public service announcement from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), local Canadian Army Reserve soldiers will conduct training in Kingston on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024.

“Soldiers will march along roadsides in uniform with their personal weapons, which will remain unloaded at all times. They will wear Canadian Army-issued uniforms and personal protective equipment,” the announcement reads.

“Members of the public can expect to see upwards of 30 soldiers at a time, marching along the roads in various formations. We ask that members of the public slow down when passing these marching soldiers.”

According to the CAF, this important exercise is being conducted to prepare Canadian Army Reserve members to operate in various weather conditions and maintain fitness and stamina while carrying their equipment.

“This type of regular, scheduled training keeps our soldiers and units ready to respond to missions in Canada like floods and wildfires, and support international stability operations with partners and allies.”

Kingstonist has inquired as to the possible locations in the city where the training will take place. No response was received by time of publication. This article will be updated if more information becomes available.

The armed forces noted that all measures are being taken to ensure minimum inconvenience to those in the area, and members of the public are asked to take extra caution when approaching military vehicles and personnel. The CAF said residents are “thanked in advance for their understanding and co-operation.”

  • Sure, why not have armed soldiers marching through town in this totally cool global political climate..

  • CAF members regular or reserve forces are required to train in various elements and conditions. To complete this training is required with all equipment that includes carrying weapons! Depending on the operation, or training orders are required to carry out the mission’s objectives! Even if is in local areas. If we are not trained this way skill fade happens then mistakes happen. Hopefully this helps explain why we have to train this way.
