Man arrested after theft from vehicles in west end

Thanks to observant citizens and a quick response from police, a number of items stolen from vehicles in the early morning have been returned to their rightful owners.

On Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, Kingston Police patrol officers responded to reports of two men checking vehicle doors on Brackenwood Crescent at approximately 2 a.m. Witnesses had observed the men behaving suspiciously while attempting to enter vehicles and contacted police. A nearby officer arrived quickly, and one of the suspects ran northbound, according to a press release from Kingston Police.

The officer pursued and located the suspect hiding in a driveway while clutching a woman’s purse. Officers found other stolen items as well, including a wallet, a watch, sunglasses, and a tool used to break windows and cut seatbelts. Police said all of the items were returned to their owners.

The 25-year-old Kingston man was arrested and charged with theft, possession of stolen property, and breach of undertaking.

Kingston Police would like to remind the public not to leave any valuable items in their vehicles.
