Male charged with attempted murder after running over his father with a stolen pickup truck

Kingston Police say they have charged a man with attempted murder after he ran over his father with a stolen pickup truck in Kingston’s east end last week.

“On May 28, 2021 at approximately 9:30 a.m. the male accused drove to his father’s home on Highway 2 in Kingston’s east end,” said Kingston Police in a statement. “His father, the victim, met him in the driveway and the two became involved in an argument regarding property that the accused had allegedly stolen from him.”

Police say that while arguing with the victim through the open driver’s window of the motor vehicle, the accused suddenly backed the pickup truck up a few feet and then accelerated toward the victim. According to police, the victim attempted to flee from the path of the pursuing motor vehicle, even changing direction while he ran, however, the accused proceeded to run him over with the truck.

The accused allegedly stopped the truck, while it was still over top of the victim, and then backed up, running him over again. Police say the victim managed to get up and stumbled over to a nearby parked vehicle at which time the accused again accelerated forward in the truck toward him. According to police, the victim observed the truck approaching and attempted to run away for a second time, however, he was struck and run over again as the motor vehicle proceeded to also sideswipe the parked vehicle.

“The accused then fled the scene in the pickup truck, failing to stop to render any form of assistance to the victim who he had just struck multiple times,” police said.

Kingston Police responded along with Frontenac Paramedics, who transported the victim to Kingston General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to police, further investigation revealed that the truck that the accused had been operating had been recently stolen from the driveway of a midtown Kingston residence. “After an extensive search for the accused he was located and arrested at approximately 2:30 p.m. on the same date by members of the Kingston Police Street Crime Unit at an address in Yarker, just northwest of the city,” said police.

The accused was subsequently transported to police headquarters where he was held to attend a bail hearing. The victim in this incident remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, police say.

“A 27-year-old local man was charged with attempted murder, dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, leaving an accident scene that caused bodily harm, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession over $5000,” police said in the statement.
