Members of the Prince Edward County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) assisted the Provincial Park Wardens at Sandbanks Provincial Park in the arrest of a man exhibiting threatening behaviour.

Just before 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, Park Wardens were called to a disturbance in the park. The Wardens attempted to arrest the male individual responsible for the disturbance, but an altercation ensued, at which point OPP officers arrived, assisted with the arrest, and took the man into custody.

According to Bill Dickson, Media Relations Coordinator for the OPP East Region, the accused man was in possession of an item that he was using as a weapon. While he would not expand on what that item was, Dickson underlined that the weapon was not a firearm or a knife.

“Anything can be a weapon if it is used as a weapon,” Dickson said, noting that the item was not used against an officer and that the accused man was swinging the item “towards another who happened to be nearby.”

As a result of the ensuing investigation, Shawn Burriss, 38, of Belleville was charged with:

  • Assault
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Resisting a peace officer
  • Uttering threats.

Burris was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton in October.
