Loyalist Township to host Family Fishing Day on Amherst Island

Loyalist Township is inviting the community to kick off fishing season next month with Family Fishing Day on Amherst Island.

The fun will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2024, in connection with Ontario’s Free Family Fishing Events. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. everyone is invited to drop by the Stella Bay Park & Dock, located at 5220 Front Road, Stella, Amherst Island for fun games, crafts, face-painting, live music, cash BBQ and, of course, fishing from the dock.

According to a release from Loyalist Township, pre-registration is required for this free family-friendly event.

“Industry professionals will also be on hand with booths to showcase and share water safety tips and information on invasive species, natural habitats, impact of pollution, and much more!” the Township stated.

“Everyone is encouraged to bring a fishing rod or two, life jackets, and join in the fun!”

As well, the Neilson Store Museum and Cultural Centre will also be open for the day, allowing visitors to take a tour and learn about the history of Amherst Island.

According to the release, the Ontario Family Fishing Events are a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters for free. The Ontario Government has designated four weekends throughout the year as free fishing, one of which is Saturday, May 11, 2024.

“There has never been a better time to go fishing with your family!” Loyalist Township expressed.

According to the Township, a cash BBQ will be available at the event and ferry crossing fares are required for motorists and cyclists,however pedestrians can board the Amherst Island ferry at no charge. A free shuttle will be available for those interested.

How to get there

Amherst Island Ferry

Getting to the island is half the fun! Enjoy the views during the short ride and take in the beauty of Lake Ontario as you travel in style on the Frontenac II.

The Amherst Island ferry service departs on the half hour from the Millhaven Dock and takes 20 minutes to cross to the Stella Dock. The ferry departs from Stella on the hour.

The return trip for a standard sized vehicle costs $10 per vehicle, $1.50 per bicycle and is free for pedestrians.

Take the shuttle

We encourage you to park at the Loyalist Township Garage located at 240 County Road 4, just south of Taylor Kidd Blvd., and catch the shuttle which will begin at 9:00 a.m. The shuttle will take you from the Township garage to the Millhaven Ferry terminal. You can then walk on to the ferry and enjoy the ride! Once across, another shuttle will be waiting to take you to the Stella Bay Park and Dock. The shuttle service will run on a continuous loop between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and is free of charge.
