Loyalist Township residents are invited to give feedback on the development of the new Community Hub at one of two public information sessions being held later this month.

The new Community Hub will be at the site of the currently at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre in Amherstview, and the township, in collaboration with members of the project’s architecture team, will be hosting the public information sessions, according to a release from the township. The public will have the opportunity to provide input on the proposed layout of the facility and future programming at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre. The township is encouraging residents to review the conceptual designs, ask questions, and offer their feedback.

According to the township, the following elements are included in this phase of the project:

  • The construction of a new aquatic facility, including the conversion of the existing pool building into change rooms
  • New Legacy Space in partnership with the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund
  • Accessibility upgrades throughout the existing facility, including the addition of an elevator and accessible change rooms and viewing areas
  • The incorporation of energy conservation measures throughout the facility to reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions

“Loyalist Township wants to engage with residents on this valuable recreational and community space,” stated Loyalist Township Mayor, Jim Hegadorn. “The W. J. Henderson Recreation Centre has served Loyalist Township and surrounding communities for over 40 years and this renewal project will modernize the facility, restore, and enhance aquatic services, and improve facility accessibility for everyone. Please come out on January 16th to become informed and provide feedback on this important Community Hub Project. Residents unable to attend can also provide their feedback via a survey which will be open from January 3rd to 27th.”

The two information sessions will be held right where the new Community Hub will stand, at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre at 322 Amherst Drive in Amherstview at the following times:

  • Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, from 12 to 3 p.m.
  • Monday, Jan.16, 2023, from 5 to 8 p.m.

All public feedback gathered at the information sessions will be included in a Validation Report, which will be presented to the newly elected Loyalist Township Council in early 2023, according to the release. This report will also provide Council with details regarding funding options.

The Government of Canada is investing over $16.5 million in funding through Infrastructure Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program (GICB) to retrofit the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre.

Learn more about the project and find the online survey on the Loyalist Township website.
