Lockdown lifted at Collins Bay Institution
The lockdown put in place early last week at Collins Bay Institution has now ended following an exception search at the facility, according to a press release from Correctional Service Canada (CSC).
The medium security unit at Collins Bay Institution was placed on lockdown on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, in order to conduct an exceptional search of the unit. The lockdown was put in place following the seizure of a number of packages containing contraband items. With the search complete, the lockdown is now over and normal operations have resumed.
As a result of the exceptional search, a number of unauthorized items were found. Details of those unauthorized items could not be disclosed as the investigation is ongoing, but Heather Hyndman, acting assistant warden of management services explained what items are considered unauthorized.
“Unauthorized items are any item that is not permitted by policy to be in an offender’s possession, and could include intoxicants, narcotics, or items that could be used as a weapon, as an example,” Hyndman said.
Visits to the institution have resumed as normal.
