One of two teens arrested in Peterborough over the weekend comes from Kingston – as did the stolen vehicle she was travelling in.

According to the Peterborough Police Service, two 13-year-olds were arrested on the night of Sunday, Jun. 9, 2024, and are now facing charges. The arrest occurred after police received a call about a vehicle being driven on a soccer field and beach at Beavermead Park in Peterborough. Police then received two further calls regarding the vehicle in question – one call indicated that the vehicle struck a fence near a parking lot in the area of Braidwood Avenue and Jane Street before leaving the area, the other call noted that the vehicle had just struck a concrete wall in the area of Morphet Avenue and Morrow Street. Two people were seen fleeing the area following the latter call, Peterborough Police said in a press release on Monday, Jun. 10, 2024.

Responding officers “spotted two people matching the description given to police” who were “walking in the area,” police reported. The two people were taken into custody, and officers learned that the vehicle the two had been travelling in had been reported stolen in Kingston on Saturday, Jun. 8, 2024, and was also “wanted in connection with a traffic complaint in the north end of Oshawa,” which occurred on Sunday evening, according to the release.

As a result of the investigation into the incident in Peterborough, Peterborough Police arrested the two people and the male and female minors have been charged as follows.

A 13-year-old male from Oshawa was charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime with a value over $5,000
  • Failure to comply with a sentence
  • Two counts of failure to remain at the scene of a collision
  • Two counts of careless driving
  • Driving a motor vehicle without a licence

That accused minor was held in custody to appear in court today, Monday, Jun. 10, 2024.

A 13-year-old female from Kingston was charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime with a value over $5,000

That accused minor was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the names of accused minors cannot be released by police, Peterborough Police noted.
