During the Canadian Brewing Awards and Conference, which was held May 12 to 14 in Calgary, Alberta, Spearhead Brewing Company’s Queen of Wheat was the recipient of a Gold award for Wheat Beer – Belgium Style (Wit).
The father-son brew team of Tomas and Jacob Schmidt created this award-winning wheat beer. According to a release from Spearhead, Queen of Wheat is a classic Belgian-style white beer brewed with hints of succulent peach and generous amounts of soft Canadian wheat to create a smooth mouthfeel. The noble hops and wheat yeast give a zesty, citrusy fruitiness with floral and spicy aromatics, the brewery stated. This is the second award for this wheat beer with Queen of Wheat also receiving a Bronze at the 2021 Ontario Brewing Awards.
The Canadian Brewing Awards is Canada’s national competition for judging the quality of Canadian manufactured beer. Canadian majority-owned breweries of all sizes are invited to compete in a Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) sanctioned blind tasting determining the best beers in 58 style categories. According to the release, a Canadian Brewing Award is a recognized symbol of Canadian brewing excellence.
“We are very proud of our team in creating this exceptional brew and appreciative of the strong support from the beer and the Canadian Brewing Award community,” said Josh Hayter, president of Spearhead Brewing Company. “It is a rather special beer because it was developed with a purpose.”
Queen of Wheat was created in celebration of diversity, inclusion and love and is the first beer in the LCBO featuring a drag performer on its label, according to the release. The Kingston-based craft beer company joined forces with activist Rowena Whey and The Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity (CCGSD) to offer a portion of the proceeds from sales of each case in support of CCGSD’s education efforts.
Queen of Wheat tall cans are available for purchase in the LCBO, Spearhead’s retail location at 675 Development Drive, or online to be shipped across Ontario at spearheadbeer.com.
