Lennox and Addington OPP charge two people with impaired driving on same day

Officers of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged two drivers with impaired driving on the same day.

The first incident took place shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 16, 2024. According to a release from the OPP, the detachment received multiple traffic complaints regarding a vehicle failing to maintain its lane on Highway 401 eastbound.

Police reportedly located and stopped the vehicle just before the County Road 41 exit, and the driver was arrested for impaired driving.

As a result of this investigation, L&A County OPP has charged Raviendran Somasundaram, age 57, of Scarborough, with:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol/drugs
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit

That same day, shortly before 10 p.m., L&A County OPP officers received a report of a vehicle that was “all over the road” before it pulled into a business at County Road 41 and Community Road, according to the release. Police attended the scene and arrested the driver for impaired driving.

As a result of this investigation, L&A County OPP has charged John Babula, age 64, of North Frontenac Township, with:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol/drugs
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit

Both accused were released on an undertaking and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee at a later date. Their licences were suspended for 90 days, and the vehicles were impounded for seven days. Each accused will be responsible for their respective fees and fines.
