Large crowd gathers for Sunbury convenience store reopening

A large crowd gathered on the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Sunbury General Store for an official reopening celebration after the store was damaged in a fire about two weeks ago.

According to a celebrant who did not wish to be identified, supporters came from as far away as BC to show support for the convenience store.

A large OPP presence was also on scene to observe and assist in traffic control for the large group of mostly bikers.

“On August 28, 2021 there was a grand reopening of a local store in Battersea,” said OPP in a statement. According to police, there were approximately 200 supporters in attendance. The large group gathered for a concert and the event was dispersed by about 5:00 p.m.

“Police were on scene, no criminal charges or traffic fines were issued,” OPP said.

The fire on Aug. 20, which has been deemed suspicious in nature, continues to be investigated.
