L&A OPP lay more impaired driving charges as year comes to a close

Two impaired driving charges were laid by L&A OPP during the last week of 2020, following charges laid in the L&A area on Christmas Eve.

A vehicle was observed by officers of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 401 Westbound near Marysville, Ontario, at approximately 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020.

According to a release from the OPP, dated Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, officers stopped the vehicle and determined that the driver was showing signs of impairment. The driver was uncooperative and refused to provide a sample of breath for analysis in the Approved Screening Device (ASD), OPP said in the release. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to detachment for processing.

As a result of the investigation L&A County OPP have charged Yasin Alabdallah, age 38, of Ottawa, Ontario with:

  • Operation While Impaired – alcohol and drug;
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand;
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine;
  • Have care or control of vehicle with Cannabis readily available;
  • Drive motor vehicle with liquor readily available; and
  • Speeding.

The accused was held for a Bail hearing and was scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee on December 28, 2020. Alabdallah’s licence was suspended for 90 days, the vehicle was impounded for seven days, and they will be responsible for all related fees and fines.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. the following Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, L&A OPP officers responded to a report of a possible impaired driver.

According to a separate release from the OPP, also dated Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, police located and stopped the vehicle on County Road 41 near Goodyear Road in Greater Napanee. OPP said the driver was showing signs of impairment and they administered an Approved Screening Device (ASD). The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to detachment for processing. 

As a result of the investigation L&A County OPP have charged Benjamin Storey, age 34, of Stone Mills Township, Ontario with:

  • Operation While Impaired – alcohol and drug; and,
  • Operating a motor vehicle while over legal blood alcohol limit.

Storey was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee in March 2021. His licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. Storey will be responsible for all related fees and fines.
