Kingston’s Aaliyah Edwards is on her way to the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Edwards, who was born in the Limestone City, was picked sixth overall by the Washington Mystics in the first round of the WNBA draft, which took place on Monday, Apr. 15, 2024. Edwards is hot off a four-year career with the University of Connecticut, including helping lead the Huskies to the most recent women’s Final Four, where they were defeated by No. 1 seed Iowa, according to TSN Canada.

In 2022, the 21-year-old former Frontenac Falcon was awarded the GLOBL JAM championship MVP (most valuable player), after Canada’s women’s basketball won the inaugural championship that year.

Edwards is the eighth Canadian taken in the first round of the WNBA Draft. She was named to the 2024 Women’s Wooden Award All American Team and was also an honourable mention on the American Press (AP) All-America team.
