A Kingston resident is facing charges after threatening an acquaintance with a knife and wounding a dog earlier this week.

According to a release from Kingston Police, on Wednesday, Jun. 26, 2024, the accused attended a Larchwood Crescent address, located in Kingston’s west end, with their dog, at the invitation of the victim. The accused had made plans to stay overnight at the victim’s residence that evening, police stated.

At approximately 3 a.m. on Thursday, Jun. 27, 2024, the accused reportedly became aggravated and began yelling at the victim. The victim was able to appease the accused and the tensions finally dissipated, police stated.

When the accused awoke at approximately 12 p.m. they, for a second time, confronted the victim in their bedroom and began to yell at them, according to the release.

“This time both the victim’s dog, as well as the dog belonging to the accused, began to growl. As the tensions escalated the dog belonging to the accused lunged and bit at them. The accused responded by punching their own dog in the head and then also attempted to strike the victim’s dog,” Kingston Police detailed.

“The accused was bitten multiple times by their own dog as they exited the room and then attended the kitchen where they retrieved a knife. The accused returned to the room and threatened the victim with the knife.”

According to police, the victim demanded that the accused, who at this point was acting very aggressively, leave their residence. The accused reportedly continued to yell at the victim and then stabbed/slashed multiple times at the victim’s dog’s head, cutting their muzzle. The accused then took the victim’s phone and left the residence on foot, police stated.

At 12:25 p.m., police received multiple calls from the public regarding a dog bite victim who was acting irrationally at the corner of Bayridge Drive and Princess Street, according to the release. The accused, however, fled the scene prior to police arrival.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., members of the Kingston Police Street Crime Unit subsequently located and arrested the accused in the area of Jane Avenue and Avenue Road. The accused was transported to police headquarters where they were held to attend a bail hearing the following day.

A 51-year-old local individual was charged with:

  • assault with a weapon
  • wounding a dog
  • uttering threats to cause death
  • theft under $5,000

Police noted that the victim’s dog was checked at the scene and did not require veterinarian care for the small cuts that the accused had inflicted with the knife.
