Kingston Sheepdog Trials take over Grass Creek Park this weekend

The Sheepdog Trials pack a variety of family-friendly activities into one weekend at Grass Creek Park, where audiences of all ages are blown away by the incredible skills of the dogs at work year after year. Submitted photo.

The Sheep Dog Trials Festival will take place at Grass Creek Park from Friday, Aug. 9 until Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019. Presented by Kingston Subaru, the festival is family-friendly and invites attendees to bring leashed pets. The attractions and events will be running rain or shine throughout the weekend.

In addition to the trials running from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m each day, there will be many daily ongoing activities, including dog events such as the Sheep Dog Trials Competition, Canadian Canine Lure Course, Doggie Play Zone, and DockDogs Worldwide. Blacksmith and chainsaw demos will be happening from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and other daily ongoing activities include a marketplace, face painting, and the Durham Agricultural Exhibit.

The festival will also have scheduled events such as the Long & McQuade Musical Petting Zoo, WoofJocks Canine All Stars, Sheep-to-Shawl Competition, Shawl Auction, and Spinning and Weaving Demos.

The Kingston Police Mobile Engagement Trailer will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the festival. Kingston Police will be holding K-9 Demonstrations at 11 a.m. each day and Mounted Unit demonstrations on Friday, Aug. 9 and Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Utilities Kingston water buggy will be present, and the City suggests that attendees bring a refillable water bottle and sunscreen.

A free shuttle bus will be available to transport attendees and their dogs to the festival grounds at Grass Creek Park. The bus pickup points are the Toys R Us parking lot, the Kingston Memorial Centre, and the Marriott Hotel at Kings Crossing.

There will be limited parking at Grass Creek Park. Accessible parking and drop-off areas will be available for attendees with accessibility needs, as well as assistive hearing devices, mat-paths, portable washrooms, and seating areas. Grass Creek Beach will be open by admission only from Aug. 9 to 11. The dog park will close to the public from Aug. 3 to 12. The boat launch will close Aug. 7 to 12.

Tickets are $15 per person online and at the gate during the event. Day passes are discounted to $10 if purchased by Thursday, August 8, 2019 at www.ticketpro.ca. Admission is free for children 12 and under.
