A weekend full of competition has led to local rowers bringing medals in a trio of metals home to Kingston.

Kingston rowers competed at two events on the weekend that ended Sunday, May 13, 2023. And with the Sunday marking another special event, it was fitting that the rowers’ competition that day was named for the spring holiday that celebrates matriarchs — the Mother’s Day Regatta.

But before that, the local rowers attended the RowOn Small Boat Regatta in Welland on Saturday, May 12, 2023. Hosted by Row Ontario for singles and pair oared boats, the Kingston rowers excelled, winning one gold and one bronze medal, as well as three rowers earning invitations to Rowing Canada selection camps.

Bob Bryden and Kyle Nummi won gold in the Under 23 and Open Men’s Pairs, while Nigel Radhakrishnan took the bronze medal in the Open Men’s Lightweight Single. The three rowers – Bryden, Nummi, and Radhakrishnan (all of whom are Queen’s University students) earned invitations to the Rowing Canada Selection Camps to determine representation internationally later this summer.

Other local results included:

  • Ceilidh MacDonald, who ranked 7th overall (6th as U23) in the Women’s Lightweight Single
  • Lauren Matai, who placed 19th (racing as U23) in the Women’s Single
  • Alex Duggan and Bryan Bain, who took 9th overall (6th as U19) in the Women’s Pairs
  • Cole Carter and Oliver Brennan, who placed 13th as U23 in the Men’s Pairs
  • Emma Abicht, who placed 20th as U19

“We’re excited about the weekend’s results and the team’s development throughout the winter and spring. Congrats to Bob, Kyle, and Nigel for earning invites to Rowing Canada camps and to everyone for a solid day of racing,” said Kingston Rowing Club Performance Coach Katie Bruggeling.

The following day, May 13, the Mother’s Day Regatta took place in St. Catherine’s, and saw Regiopolis Notre Dame’s Cole Carter and Alex Duggan take the gold in Mixed Doubles. But the medals didn’t stop there, as Oliver Brennan of Kingston Secondary School earned the silver in the Junior Men’s Single, Regi’s Duggan took the silver in the Women’s Single 63 kg Single, and Emma Abicht earned bronze in the Women’s Single 63 kg Single. In other results, Byn Bain took 7th place in the Senior Women’s Single.

“These results show that all the hard work over the winter is paying off and the athletes are well positioned for the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championships to be held in St Catharine’s in three weeks,” said Coach Brennan.
