Kingston residents charged after alleged copper wire theft in Leeds Township

Two individuals from Kingston are facing charges after the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a theft investigation.

According to a release from the OPP, just before 2 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, Leeds County OPP officers were conducting ongoing proactive patrols in Front Leeds-Lansdowne Township, following several reports of suspicious activity.

“Two men were observed within the lightly forested area. The Emergency Response Team and the area Canine Unit assisted in arresting the two. Copper wire and tools used to obtain the wire were seized,” the OPP reported.

Berry Hilliard, age 53, and Ryan O’Kane, age 45, both from Kingston, are facing the following charges:

  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

Both individuals were released by way of an Undertaking and are scheduled to appear in the Brockville Ontario Court of Justice in early April 2024, to answer to these charges.

Kingstonist has inquired with the OPP as to where exactly the two accused individuals were located, as well as where the copper wire was stolen from, but no response was received by time of publication. This article will be updated if/when more information becomes available.
