Kingston resident arrested, charged after assault with a rock

Kingston Police have shared details on an assault that took place in the area of Montreal Street near Rideau Street over the weekend.

According to a release from Kingston Police, the assault took place at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 31, 2024.

“On this date the victim was standing outside when they were approached by the accused,” Kingston Police detailed. “The accused, without provocation, then proceeded to strike the victim in the head with a weapon that consisted of a large rock being swung inside a sling-like piece of material. The victim fell to the ground unconscious at which time the accused struck the victim in the head with their foot.”

According to the release, the accused then left the area and Kingston Police were contacted to attend the scene. The victim, who suffered serious injuries, was subsequently transported to hospital by Frontenac Paramedics.

Police said officers located and arrested the accused at approximately 6:30 p.m., after he returned to the general area of the initial assault.

The accused was transported to police headquarters where they were held to attend a bail hearing the following day.

According to Kingston Police, as a result, James Ferguson, a 37-year-old individual who resides locally, was charged with:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace
  • Three counts of breach of probation

Kingstonist inquired with Kingston Police if the accused was remanded into custody at the bail hearing, as well as the current condition of the victim. No response was provided by time of publication.
