Officers responding to a disturbance at an apartment building in the north end of Kingston ended up being assaulted by the person who caused that disturbance.

According to Kingston Police, officers were assaulted multiple times by an individual who was being arrested after breaking into an apartment building. But even the break-in incident was somewhat violent, as the accused person cut themselves when they punched through the glass window of the building.

Police said the incidents occurred on Friday, Jun. 14, 2024, when officers responded to a reported disturbance “in the area of Conacher Drive” at approximately 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival at the apartment building, police found a large hole through a hallway window of the building. That hole, police said, was “covered in blood.”

“Blood droplets on the ground led officers to one of the units and the accused was found inside bleeding from a cut/wound to their arm from punching through the glass in the hallway,” Kingston Police said in a press release on Monday, Jun. 17, 2024.

When officers attempted to place the accused person under arrest, they violently resisted, attempting to pull something from their waistband, police reported.

“After a short struggle, the accused was handcuffed at which time they turned and spat at one of the officers. The accused then proceeded to bite a second officer. Further, the accused made threats to cause bodily harm to both arresting officers during the incident,” police stated.

Following the arrest, the accused was searched and found to be in possession of a flick knife, which had been hidden in the waistband of the accused’s pants. According to police, the individual was also breaching multiple probation conditions at the time of the arrest. The accused was transported to Kingston Police Headquarters and held to attend a bail hearing. Police did not disclose the results of that hearing.

As a result of the investigation, Kingston Police said, a 23-year-old from Kingston was charged with:

  • Two counts of assaulting a peace officer
  • Resisting arrest
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Uttering threats to cause bodily harm
  • Mischief with a cost under $5,000
  • Three counts of breach of probation
