Kingston Police seek public assistance in downtown robbery, slashing

Police are seeking assistance from the public after a robbery in downtown Kingston occurred on the morning of Friday, Apr. 26, 2024.

According to police, the victim was walking southbound near the intersection of Barrie Street and York Street when, at approximately 8:25 a.m., they were approached by the suspect who demanded money while displaying an edged weapon (bladed weapon).

“The suspect slashed at the victim and a struggle ensued, causing the victim and suspect to fall to the ground. As a result of the attack, the victim sustained superficial cuts to their arms and leg before they were able to get up and flee,” police said in a press release later in the day.

Police described the suspect as being a Caucasian male of approximately 40 years of age, standing 5’9” (175.26 cm) tall and weighing approximately 180 to 200 lbs (82 to 91 kg) with a medium build. Police further said the suspect had “unkept greying hair, a greying beard, and was described as having strong body odour and a deep voice.”

At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a black puffy jacket. He was last seen on foot in the area of Barrie and York Street.

“The victim and the suspect were not known to each other, and police do not believe the victim was targeted for a particular reason. Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant with their surroundings,” Kingston Police said.

“Police are asking anyone who may have been driving in the area or lives in the area to review dash and/or security camera footage in the event this altercation or the suspect was captured on video.”
