Kingston Police are asking for the public’s assistance as part of an investigation involving an assault with a weapon which occurred over the weekend.

According to a release from Kingston Police, at approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jun. 23, 2024, two individuals were attacked by another person at Champlain Park in the Kingscourt neighbourhood. One of the victims was struck in the head with an object during the attack and suffered minor injuries, police detailed. Several posts on social media about the incident indicated that the assailant was wielding a hammer, however, police did not confirm what type of weapon was involved.

Police described the suspect, who was unknown to the victims, as a Caucasian male, 20 years of age or older.

“The suspect was noted to be acting erratically through yelling and gestures prior to the attack,” police said.

“The suspect fled on foot in the area of Leroy Grant Drive and Elliott Avenue. Investigators believe the suspect may have been present in the area for a period of time prior to the attack or may live in the nearby area.”

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the offence or observed a male acting in this fashion to contact Detective Constable Bryan McMillian at 613-549-4660 ext. 6343 or via email at [email protected].

Kingstonist reached out to Brandon Tozzo, City Councillor for the Kingscourt-Rideau district for comment on the incident:

“I was shocked to learn about the incident, but thankful no one was seriously injured. Unfortunately, with the on-going mental health and addiction crisis, incidents like this are becoming commonplace throughout the city. I’d ask the community to come forward with any information they have about the incident, and can assure my constituents, the city and Kingston Police are working to make sure we have a safe community for everyone to enjoy.”
