A single-vehicle collision closed down a stretch of Middle Road in Kingston’s east end earlier this week after the driver of a dirt bike was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, Kingston Fire & Rescue, Frontenac Paramedics, and Kingston Police were dispatched to the report of a collision on Middle Road at Abbey Dawn Road, located just south of Highway 401 in the city’s east end. Initial reports indicated that the driver of a motorcycle had been thrown from the bike and injured, however, Kingston Police later clarified that the vehicle was actually a dirt bike, and that no other vehicles had been involved. Frontenac Paramedics had tended to the driver within minutes of arriving on the scene, and the driver was en route to Kingston General Hospital (KGH) by 8:45 p.m., according to those in the area.

Middle road was closed to traffic in the immediate area as police carried out an on-scene investigation. Officers at the scene told residents in the area that the collision was “very bad,” according to those residents. However, the roadway was reopened again by 10:55 p.m.

In response to inquiries about the incident, Kingston Police said the driver of the dirt bike suffered “serious injuries.”

“Traffic Safety Unit Collision Reconstructionists were called to the scene to investigate,” said Constable Ash Gutheinz, Media Relations Officer for Kingston Police.

“The investigation continues at this time.”

Kingstonist will provide updated coverage on this incident if/when more information becomes available.
