Kingston Police identify victim, suspect in Fergus St homicide

The Kingston Police Major Crime Unit is continuing their investigation following the murder of a local 43-year-old Kingston man at a residence on Fergus Street near Concession Street in downtown Kingston, and are asking anyone with outdoor surveillance systems in the area, or who may have any information related to yesterday’s incident to contact them.
The initial call occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021, and was reported as a weapons offence in the area of Fergus and Concession Streets.
Upon arrival, police had located the unresponsive victim, Jason Wagar, at a Fergus Street residence and had commenced CPR in an attempt to save his life, according to a release from Kingston Police, dated Friday, Aug. 13, 2021. Frontenac Paramedics arrived shortly after and transported the victim to Kingston General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Further investigation revealed that the deceased victim had sustained gunshot wounds and a definitive cause of death will be determined pending an autopsy.
“The accused was quickly located and arrested by police and was subsequently transported to police headquarters where he later attended a bail hearing and was then remanded into custody,” said Kingston Police.
Through further investigation, police learned that the victim and the accused were known to each other, and that during the violent incident the accused had also discharged his firearm at another individual who had been inside the residence prior to fleeing from the scene on foot.
Vaughan Roberts, a 20-year-old man from Ajax, Ontario, was initially charged with second-degree murder and now faces the additional charges of attempted murder, discharging a firearm with the intent to wound, using a firearm to commit an indictable offence, pointing a firearm, possession of a loaded regulated firearm, and being an unlicenced person in possession of a restricted weapon.

Police are still asking that anyone who may have exterior home video surveillance systems that would have captured video footage of the area of Fergus Street, Concession Street, Nelson Street, and First Avenue around the general time of the offence to please contact the Major Crime Unit.
