Police were unaware of the assault when they were first called to the location where it took place at an Adelaide Street address, just east of Division Street and south of Stephen Street, at approximately 12:40 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, 2022.

Responding to a call requesting a welfare check at the address, investigating officers found that, the day before, the accused man, Adrion Cole, had been at the residence, where both his mother and father reside. Cole’s mother became concerned for her husband’s well-being when he failed to respond to her from the basement of their home after going to the basement with their son, according to a press release from Kingston Police on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022.

When the mother proceeded downstairs, she found the victim, her husband, lying on the floor of the basement near the bottom of the stairs, unresponsive and unconscious, and called 911. Both Frontenac Paramedic Services and Kingston Fire and Rescue responded to the call and rendered assistance to the victim.

“The victim was then transported to Kingston General Hospital by Frontenac Paramedics, where it was determined that he had suffered serious and significant injuries to his head,” Kingston Police said.

“The following day, the attending physician, after thoroughly examining the victim’s multiple head injuries, determined that [the injuries] were not consistent in providing credence to the claim that the victim had fallen down the stairs leading to the basement of the residence.”

Police attended the residence again and found that Cole was still at the scene. Additionally, he was currently on numerous court-imposed probation conditions, one of which prohibited him from communicating with his mother and father, and another of which prohibited him from attending his parents’ residence on Adelaide Street.

“Further information was obtained by police while at the residence which provided grounds for his arrest for the charge of aggravated assault in relation to the victim’s injuries,” police asserted.

As a result, Adrion Cole, 37, of Kingston, was charged with aggravated assault, and four counts of breach of probation.

According to police, the victim remains in the ICU at KGH, suffering from life-threatening injuries.
