Kingston man charged with assault at Whitby hockey game

A 43-year-old Kingston man has been charged following an altercation at an under 16 hockey game in Whitby earlier this week, according to Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS).

“On Monday, March 28, 2022, at approximately 10:30 p.m., members from Central West Division received a call for a disturbance at the Iroquois Park Sports Complex,” DRPS said in a release. “Reports indicate that, following a fight between two players, one of the players was grabbed and shoved by an adult male while the player was exiting the ice surface. Others in attendance intervened and the altercation spilled out into the parking lot.”

According to DRPS, Shawn Melo, age 43, of Kingston has been charged with: assault, and causing a disturbance by fighting. He was released on an undertaking.

Police continue to investigate this incident. Anyone with any information, including video taken at the time, is asked to contact Det. Cst. Adepegba of the Central West Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1832.
