Kingston area schools, many businesses closed due to winter storm

Kingston area schools and many businesses were closed on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, due to a winter storm that brought heavy snowfall throughout the region.

“Due to inclement weather, all ALCDSB schools are CLOSED Jan. 17. All in-person and virtual learning is CANCELLED. We look forward to seeing students & staff back in the classroom tomorrow. Stay safe everyone!” said the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board on Monday morning.

“Director of Education has also taken extraordinary step of closing all LDSB schools/sites Monday, Jan. 17. Students and staff should NOT attend school/sites. All LDSB buildings will remain closed and all learning and classes are suspended for the day. Stay safe,” echoed the Limestone District School Board.

Both Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College also closed their campuses to in-person academic activities. Stauffer Library remains open.

KFL&A Public Health took to Twitter this morning to let the community know they are cancelling vaccine appointments: “Due to inclement weather and the safety of our staff, volunteers, and the public, we are cancelling all COVID-19 vaccine clinics today (Jan 17). If you had an appointment today, please walk-in to any of the clinic sites during rest of week or rebook: http://ow.ly/wFfj50HvWT3“.

As of 10 a.m., Kingston Transit cancelled all routes except for Express buses and Route 10.

The Township of South Frontenac postponed garbage and recycling pick up due to the significant weather event. Township residents will have their pick-up day moved by one day for the week of January 17, 2021.

Many local businesses also took the step of closing due to inclement weather, citing a desire to protect staff and clients from having to drive in hazardous weather. The following is a list of businesses known to have closed today:
