Kingston and area high school hockey: The road to the finals

As the high school hockey season comes to an end, teams are still fighting for spots in the Kingston Area Secondary School Athletics Association (KASSAA) finals.

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, the girls’ varsity hockey teams competed in the quarterfinals. Napanee District Secondary School (NDSS) took on Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High school (RND) at the Strathcona Paper Centre. NDSS took the final victory with a shutout win of 10-0 over the female Panther team.

At the same time, Frontenac Secondary School (FSS) took on Kingston Secondary School (KSS) at the Invista Centre. The Frontenac girls’ team came out on top with a 6-1 victory against the KSS Bears.

FSS will now take on Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School in the semi-finals on Monday, Feb. the 26, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at the Invista Centre, while NDSS will face the LaSalle Secondary School Knights at 3 p.m.

In the other varsity league, the boys’ teams battled for their spots in the semi-finals on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024. KSS faced Sydenham High School and took the win in overtime with a final score of 3-2.

Meanwhile, RND’s Panthers took the win over Lasalle with an 8-5 final score, after taking an early lead over the Knights.

Finally, FSS took home a 5-0 shutout against École secondaire catholique Sainte-Marie-Rivier, and Holy Cross also shutout their competition with a 9-0 win over NDSS.

The boys’ finals will take place Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, at the Invista Centre, where the RND Panthers will face off against the Frontenac Falcons at 2:30 p.m. in the MNP Arena, while the KSS Bears take on Holy Cross at 2:30 p.m. in the Desjardins Arena at the Invista Centre.

The winners of these two games will face each other on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. in the Desjardins Arena at the Invista Centre, with the winning team to be named the 2024 KASSAA champions.
