KFPL leading Indigenous Canada course discussion group
Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) is once again encouraging the community to continue to educate themselves on Indigenous rights, culture and resilience. Following a successful pilot program in 2021, the library is creating a space to support and encourage a deeper understanding of Indigenous history and contemporary issues.
According to a release from the KFPL, they are inviting patrons to enrol in the University of Alberta’s Indigenous Canada course and connect with their community in conversation. The library said their Indigenous Canada course discussion program is designed to encourage an informed dialogue that stems from learning about Indigenous historical experiences, worldviews and current events. After each week’s lesson, participants will join KFPL’s discussion, examining the topic of the week in whole-group conversations and in smaller breakout groups. The program runs on Tuesdays from Mar. 1 through May 17, 2022.
Indigenous Canada is a 12-lesson massive open online course, offered through the university’s Faculty of Native Studies. Registration is free, though participants can receive a completion certificate for a small fee. Participants will explore topics like land claims, legal systems and rights, Indigenous political activism and contemporary Indigenous life, art, and its expressions, according to the release.
“We offered this discussion program during the summer of 2021 and there was a great deal of interest,” shared Jake Miller, Librarian, Adult Programming. “The discussion component highlighted how much people knew and didn’t know, and brought new ideas into the open. This is a truly unique opportunity to learn or relearn and discuss.”
The discussion group will meet over Zoom on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The library asks participants to register for the course and take the first lesson here before the opening discussion on Tuesday, Mar. 1, 2022.
