Joyceville Institution, a multi-security prison in Kingston’s east end, is currently on lockdown, according to Correctional Service Canada (CSC).
The lockdown was announced by the CSC late in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. The CSC said that the lockdown was put in place to allow staff members to conduct an exceptional search of the Institution, though the federal correctional agency did not say what prompted the lockdown.
“The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates,” CSC said in a press release, noting that visitors are to contact the institution prior to their visit, as some visits have been suspended until the search is completed.
“Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.”
