The Jane’s Walk Festival Weekend takes place in hundreds of cities May 3 to 5, 2024, to honour Jane Jacobs, and 19 different walks are being offered in the Kingston area.

Jane Jacobs, a journalist, author, and activist, is best known for her influence on urban studies and her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961). According to Jane’s Walks Kingston, her book upended the ideas of modernist city planning and building, and offered a new vision of diverse, fine-grained cities made for and by ordinary people.

Jacobs’ grassroots efforts stimulated residents’ interest in their own neighbourhoods and precipitated a worldwide phenomenon, according to event organizers.

“These are not just historical walking tours. They include the natural element, explore changes, the social fabric and so much more. It’s [a] great way to
discover all sorts of things about people and places in a Kingston you thought you already knew,” said John Grenville, Jane’s Walk Kingston co-ordinator.

According to the release, each year more volunteer citizen-led walks are added and more residents participate. This year, there are 19 uniquely different walks which will include various aspects of human life and wildlife, past and present. The free walks will wind through greenspaces and historic neighbourhoods and a couple will take participants to final resting places, Jane’s Walks Kingston noted.

“This is for everyone of all ages from across the city, and a great opportunity for local community groups and individuals to showcase what’s special about
where we live,” Grenville added.

The walks take place at a variety of locations around Kingston — Lemoine Point, Belle Park. Williamsville, Portsmouth, the K&P Trail, and many more. They vary in length and cover a wide variety of topics and historical settings.
