A head-on collision closed Highway 7 in Tweed on the afternoon of Monday, Apr. 17, 2023. Three vehicles were involved in the collision and one person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to a release from the Central Hastings Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), officers responded to the report just after 3 p.m. on the above date. The OPP said that the initial investigation indicates that an SUV travelling eastbound was stopped to turn left on Varty Road and was struck from behind by another vehicle. The impact from the initial collision forced the SUV into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with a westbound pick-up truck.

The 47-year-old male driver of the initial SUV was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene, OPP said. The other two drivers were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Highway 7 was closed between Highway 37 and Highway 41 for investigation for the remainder of the afternoon and evening. The investigation is ongoing with assistance from the Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) and Reconstructionist.
