Inmate sent to hospital after assault at Collins Bay Institution

An inmate at Collins Bay Institution has been taken to an outside hospital for treatment after an assault, according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).
At approximately 10:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, the inmate in question was found to have been the victim of an assault in the medium-security unit of the Institution, CSC said in a press release on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020. The injured inmate was evaluated by staff members before being taken to an outside hospital to receive treatment.
“The Ontario Provincial Police-led Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad and the institution are presently investigating the incident,” CSC said, noting that no staff members or other inmates were injured during the incident.
“The safety and security of institutions, their staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.”
When asked whether a weapon was involved in the assault, or if they would expand on the injuries sustained by the inmate, CSC declined to comment.
“For privacy reasons and due to the ongoing investigation, CSC cannot release any further information at this time,” said Lynn Dufresne, Acting Assistant Warden of Management Services at Collins Bay Institution. CSC will continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident and work with police in doing so, the federal correctional authority said.
