Inmate facing murder charges after assault causing death

An inmate at Millhaven Institution has been charged with murder after the death of a fellow inmate.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)-led Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad, under direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, has charged an inmate at Millhaven Institution with Murder, according to a release from the OPP, dated Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020.

At approximately 3 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020, members of the Penitentiary Squad responded after an individual was transported to hospital from Millhaven Institution. According to the release, the individual has since died from injuries he suffered in an assault.

The deceased has been identified as Dakota Laine Ryder, age 25, who had been incarcerated at the Millhaven facility.

As a result of the investigation, the Penitentiary Squad, in conjunction with the Correctional Service of Canada, has arrested and charged Imo Atiba Lewis, age 37, with First Degree Murder.

The accused was scheduled to make an initial court appearance by video before the Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee today, Wednesday Sept. 23, 2020.
