An inmate at the Regional Treatment Centre of Millhaven Institution has died while in custody, according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).

In a press release on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, CSC reported that 77-year-old Ganesh Persaud died on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, of apparent natural causes. At the time of his death, Persaud had been serving an indeterminant sentence for second degree murder, which commenced on June 28, 2018, the national correctional authority said.

“The inmate’s next of kin have been notified,” CSC  reported.

As in all cases involving an inmate death, CSC will review the circumstances, the federal agency relayed. CSC policy requires that the Office of the Coroner be notified upon the death of an inmate.
