An inmate from Collins Bay Institution has died while in the custody of Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

According to CSC, Drago Knezevic passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023. At the time of his death, Knezevic, 63, had been serving a sentence of nine years, 11 months, and 13 days which began on Nov. 4, 2019, for possession of schedule I/II substances for the purpose of trafficking and import/export of schedule I/II substances.

Knezevic’s next of kin have been notified. CSC noted that Knezevic’s passing was of “apparent natural causes.”

According to multiple Ontario news reports from 2018, Knezevic was arrested, then charged and convicted in relation to the attempted smuggling over over $30 million worth of cocaine into Canada via the Ambassador Bridge. An appeal of his conviction in October of 2022 was rejected by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, according to court documents.

CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified, the federal correctional agency said in a media release dated Friday, Dec. 1, 2023. As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the CSC will review the circumstances.
