The Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame (CSHOF) is a collaboration between The Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame, the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston and Sail Canada. According to a release from the Marine Museum, inductees must be Canadian citizens and can be inducted in any of the three categories: sailor, technical or contributor. The induction ceremony will take place Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022.
For the time being, inductees are chosen by the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame Management Committee, with representation from across the country. The Marine Museum said that the selection process is based on criteria established in the CSHOF By-Laws. In the future, it is intended that the nomination process will be opened up to the sailing public, according to the release.
As per the By-Laws, any Canadian sailor who wins an Olympic or a Paralympic medal, or a World Championship in an Olympic or Paralympic class is considered an automatic inductee. Six of the 12 inductees from the class of 2022 meet that criterion. The other six inductees are directly associated with the international success of the racing yacht Red Jacket and the founding of C&C Yachts. Red Jacket was donated to the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston by the late Peter Milligan.
“I am thrilled that Sail Canada, the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston and the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame are once again recognizing a number of Canadians who have contributed greatly to sailing in Canada and internationally,” said Hugh McGugan, Chair of Sail Canada’s Board of Directors. “This year’s Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame inductees include:
- Women’s 470 World Champions from multiple years (1985, 1986);
- Olympic bronze medalists in the Flying Dutchman class (1988);
- Yacht designers, builders and sailors who led numerous successful campaigns for C&C Yachts with Red Jacket and Manitou, helping to establish Canada as a major international player in yacht design and construction;
- The designer and builder for the remarkable and enduring Shark class of keelboat, who was also a founder of C&C Yachts.”
“Thank you to our longstanding partners, the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame and the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston for their hard work on identifying and celebrating these individuals who are most deserving of this national recognition as Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame inductees for 2022,” McGugan continued. “I hope to see many members of our Canadian sailing community at this 2022 Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame induction event at the Kingston Yacht Club this October!”
