Impaired driving leads to arrest and charges for Kingston man

Kingston Police, while on general patrol in a marked cruiser, observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed westbound on Princess Street toward Portsmouth Avenue on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 at approximately 4:10 a.m..

According to a release from Kingston Police, dated Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, the officer observed that the motor vehicle was swerving multiple times in and out of its marked lane of travel and initiated a traffic stop on Portsmouth Avenue. Police requested that the accused roll down his window, however it took him approximately one minute to locate the button to do so, Kingston Police said in the release.

After speaking with the accused, Kingston Police say the officer made observations that the driver was impaired by alcohol. The accused was arrested at approximately 4:20 a.m. and transported to police headquarters where he provided two breath samples. According to the release, the accused was found to have approximately two times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 42-year-old local man was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance and impaired operation of a conveyance while exceeding blood alcohol concentration.

The accused was released with a future court date. His driver’s licence is automatically suspended for 90 days and would face a one year suspension if convicted. The vehicle was seized and impounded for 7 days, with the accused being responsible for all fees and fines.
