Impaired driver charged after passenger contacts police

A passenger in a vehicle travelling eastbound on Highway 401 in Greater Napanee called the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to report that the vehicle was being driven erratically.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 23, 2022, officers of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the OPP responded to the traffic complaint. According to a release from the OPP, officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

OPP said that officers determined that the driver was showing signs of impairment and they were subsequently arrested and transported to the L&A County Detachment for further processing.

As a result L&A County OPP have charged Jegatheesvaran Kanakasinkam, age 51, of Scarborough, Ontario, with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs;
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus); and
  • Dangerous Operation.

Kanakasinkam was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee in April 2022. The accused’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. Kanakasinkam will be responsible for all related fees and fines.
