Holy Cross looking for input on new team/school nickname

Earlier this year, Kingstonist reported that Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School was considering a team name change because its nickname — Crusaders — no longer connects with the message the school wants to embrace.

Now, the west-end high school is seeking a new school nickname that embodies its mission, vision, and values, according to a release from the Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB).

“The Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School community is in the process of selecting a new school/team nickname. The process has been underway for years now, in conjunction with the Board plan for the two schools who currently have the name ‘Crusaders’,” the board stated.

“Our next step is to gather an initial list of potential names and input. Once this input is received, a short list will be created followed by a final vote. Student voice will continue to be at the centre of our decision-making process.”

The board said that the school looks forward to receiving input from students, staff, alumni, and community members.

“Please share your name suggestion as well as rationale. Your rationale should include why this name has a tie to our Catholic school identity and values,” ALCDSB stated.

“Please note this is a gathering of ideas and not a vote, so multiple entries of the same suggestion are unnecessary.”

Those wanting to offer their input can visit the school’s online survey.
