Highway 401 on-ramp reopens following fertilizer spill

All lanes of the 401 eastbound on-ramp at Gardiners Road have reopened following a tractor trailer rollover in Kingston on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

Police said the truck hit the ditch and lost its load around 9:15 a.m., and it took crews a number of hours to clean up the mess. Around 4 p.m. the truck was removed from the scene.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the transport was hauling potash, a natural health booster for lawns, and fertilizer. As a result of the spill, police said both the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Transportation were notified and called to the scene.

Police reported no injuries and have yet to say whether any charges are pending as their investigation is ongoing.

This is a developing story with more to come.
