Green Party of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston calls for Hillier’s resignation

Independent MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston Randy Hillier is in the hot seat again, after posting allegedly racist remarks on Twitter earlier this week.

On Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, the Green Party of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston demanded the resignation of Hillier “immediately” after his racially-fueled remarks about federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, according to a release from the party.

The Tweet, posted on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, saw Hillier say, “A terrorist speaks out to condemn Canadians to starvation” in response to a CTV interview with the Minister.

The Green Party pointed out that this is not the first time Hillier has made a racist tweet towards a federal Minister. On June 1, 2020, Minister Ahmed Hussen spoke about his own experiences with anti-black racism. To which MPP Hillier tweeted “A guilty conscience?”

Local Green party candidate, Marlene Spruyt, responded today, saying, “We expect all of our elected representatives to be respectful of others regardless of their policy opinions.”

Hillier also made a series of social media posts on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, falsely blaming “domestic terrorism” and “shorting (of) the food supply” for an empty meat cooler at the Smiths Falls Walmart. The Walmart store confirmed that the empty coolers were a result of malfunctioning equipment, not supply chain issues.

In the release today, the local Green Party stated that Hillier has “reached a new low and needs to step aside immediately. Residents of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston deserve a representative with integrity.”

  • Hillier knows how to split the vote in his riding to get elected. He is a very experienced politician. We all know he is paid well. He is past getting upset about.

  • Mr Hillier and his “ilk” are out of sync with today’s humanity and seriously Randy “get a grip you are a national embarrassment “ .

    • You are so right. However, the easiest way to encourage him to retire, since if my information serves me correctly, approx. $117,000 annually and I am assuming a pension as well: is to mount a solid and effective campaign to prevent him from getting re-elected. Don’t let the vote get split between many candidates from different parties in his riding. Right now he is getting free publicity with his inflammatory comments. People need to ask themselves if they would give up the income he is making. He needs to transition into retirement. People in his riding need to make it happen. Take action, not reaction. Stay safe, Genevieve.
