Fundraiser for 16 year-old victim in Wolfe Island crash quickly exceeds goal
A Go Fund Me campaign for a victim of an alleged hit-and-run collision has met and surpassed its $10,000 goal in just one day.
“We have hit the goal in such a short time. We cannot believe the support for the Knox family from this community. You are all so kind,” wrote Paul Cardoso, the fundraiser’s organizer on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020.
“We will be keeping the fundraiser open to help the family further. Thank you all for spreading the word, sharing and continual support.”
Cardoso’s fundraiser is running in support of 16 year-old Caleb Knox, a victim in a multi-vehicle collision that took place in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sep. 13, 2020. Knox was struck by a truck on Base Line Rd, Wolfe Island, while stopped at the side on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). He was reportedly wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, but left in critical condition.
An investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) revealed that two pick-up trucks, a motorcycle and the ATV were all involved.
Cardoso said Caleb was transported to the hospital by ambulance, requiring extensive surgeries and rehab. According to the OPP, the driver of the motorcycle, a 19-year-old also from Wolfe Island, sustained serious injuries as well.
Knox’s treatment is now reportedly continuing in Toronto. His single father, Shane, plans to commute for at least for the next four months between Ronald McDonald House in Toronto and Kingston, for work. Shane Knox also has a 15 year-old daughter, who will be staying with family during this time.
“Between travelling costs, working less, medical fees, home renovations that will be needed to assist Caleb when he returns, everyday bills and nutrition, the Knox family can use all the help they can get at this time,” Cardoso said.
Cardoso is also personally sponsoring the donations by offering in-kind discounts on vehicle repairs at his business, Paul’s Auto, to anyone who contributes. Currently, the Go Fund Me donation is nearing $15,000.
