Environment Canada has upgraded the special weather statement for the Kingston area to a freezing rain warning as of 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019.

The warning, which is issued for the Kingston, Odessa, Frontenac Islands, Napanee, Consecon, Picton, and Sandbanks Park areas points to freezing rain tonight.

Snow will begin late this afternoon, then change to ice pellets this evening.

“Snow and ice pellets amounts of 2 to 5 cm are expected. Precipitation will change to freezing rain after midnight. Freezing rain will change to rain early Thursday morning as temperatures rise above the zero degree mark,” the warning states.

“This wintry mix of precipitation is associated with a Colorado low that will track over the area tonight.”

Untreated surfaces may become icy and slippery, and travel may be affected. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Slow down driving in slippery conditions, watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance.

Kingstonist will continue to monitor the situation and advise of any updated information that may be helpful.
