Just before 6 p.m. on Boxing Day, a fire broke out at a local motel, sending four people to hospital and resulting in a multi-day investigation into the fire.
At approximately 5:43 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023, crews with Kingston Fire & Rescue were dispatched to the Knights Inn, located at 1155 Princess Street in central Kingston.
There, a fire was growing steadily. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke fire conditions present and entered the building to begin fighting the fire. Frontenac Paramedics, who were also dispatched to the fire, found their services were unfortunately very needed — paramedics transported four people to Kingston General Hospital (KGH) as a precautionary measure, Kingston Fire & Rescue told Kingstonist the following day.
The local fire department said fire crews were able to extinguish the fire relatively quickly, however, firefighters remained on scene until after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023. Kingston Police were called in to secure the scene, and Kingston Fire & Rescue returned to the site on Wednesday afternoon to begin processing the scene.
According to Kingston Fire & Rescue, the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM) was called in, with an OFM investigator expected to arrive on scene late Wednesday.
Kingston Fire & Rescue are expected to provide further information on this incident on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023. This article will be updated as more information becomes available.
Update (Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, at 2 p.m.):
After no update on the fire that broke out at the Knights Inn (see above) on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, as Kingston Fire & Rescue has previously indicated, Kingstonist inquired with the local fire department for any new information.
While Kingston Fire & Rescue disclosed that the on-scene portion of the investigation into the incident is now complete, determining the cause of the fire is not.
“The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time,” Kingston Fire & Rescue said in an email.
In response to inquiries regarding the extent injuries suffered by residents and the condition of the four residents who were transported to hospital by Frontenac Paramedics on the night of the fire, the fire department disclosed that all four residents have been released from hospital.
“We have no additional information regarding these individuals,” Fire & Rescue said.
