Four facing multiple charges after OPP locate gun, drugs during collision investigation

Four people are facing multiple charges after officers from the Lennox and Addington (L&A) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single vehicle collision and located drugs and a handgun in the vehicle.

According to a release from the OPP, shortly after 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16m 2024, the L&A detachment received a call for a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 7 just east of Kellar Road, in Addington Highlands Township.

“When police arrived there were four males outside of the vehicle walking around. The vehicle had slid off the road and into a guard rail. The vehicle was damaged and no one was injured in the collision,” the OPP stated.

Police reportedly observed a strong odour of cannabis and open alcohol in the motor vehicle as they were talking to the four males. The vehicle was searched and police located alcohol, a loaded handgun, approximately seven pills of suspected codeine, 5.14 grams of suspected methamphetamines, 80.07 grams of suspected cocaine, and 11.92 grams of suspected fentanyl. The four males were placed under arrest.

As a result of this investigation, L&A County OPP has charged Isaiah Banton, age 23, of Toronto, Ontario, with:

  • Failure to comply with a release order
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – opioid
  • Tampering with the serial number of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Failure to comply with probation order
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm

L&A County OPP has also charged Clive Ferguson, age 54, of Brampton, Ontario, with:

  • Failure to comply with an undertaking
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – opioid
  • Tampering with the serial number of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor
  • Driving a motor vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

The third charged individual is Hamad Shomari, 30, from Toronto, Ontario, who is facing the following:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – opioid
  • Tampering with a serial number of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm

L&A County OPP have also charged David Jajua, age 32, of Mississauga, Ontario, with:

  • Two counts of failure to comply with release order
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – opioid
  • Tampering with a serial number of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Eight counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to probation order

All accused were held for a bail hearing and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee on a later date.

Lennox & Addington County OPP Detachment Provincial Constable David Yome said, “This is another great example of teamwork leading to safer communities. If you see something, say something. Your vigilance matters. If you observe any suspicious activity, please report it immediately to police. Together, we can keep our communities safe.”
