While Saturday, Apr. 13, 2024, started off very wet, it did not deter the volunteers who still came out, dressed for the weather, to collect food and donations for the Partners in Mission 2024 Food Blitz Day.

According to a release from the local food bank, the blitz collected just over 18,000 lbs of food during the one day event. While short of the 25,000 lbs goal, organizers said that shoppers were generous and the teams had fun.

“As Kingston’s food bank, our annual Food Blitz has been an essential food drive for us every spring since 1984,” said Dan Irwin, Executive Director at Partners in Mission. “We also have a goal of $30,000 for the month of April. We have received $14,550.15 in donations so far.”

In the release, Partners in Mission thanked the nine grocery stores for hosting the blitz teams: Tanya’s No Frills on Division Street, Andrew & Emily’s No Frills on Coverdale Drive, the Loblaws locations on Princess Street and Midland Avenue, Freshco, Van Wart’s Your Independent Grocer on Gore Rd, Food Basics on Highway 15 and Princess Street, and Giant Tiger in the RioCan Centre.

Irwin and his team also extended “a heart felt thank you” to their volunteers from the following organizations:

  • Kingston Rotary groups
  • Kingston and Area Real Estate Association
  • Kingston Health Sciences Centre
  • RBC
  • Kingston & Region Commissionaires
  • BMO
  • Empire Life Insurance
  • CFB Kingston
  • and “numerous individuals”

“Partners in Mission Food Bank has been helping our Kingston and Loyalist Township neighbours in need for 40 years. We do not receive government or agency funding, and we rely solely on our community for food and financial support. We feel incredibly lucky to be a part of a generous community,” Irwin expressed.
